In My Element

The movement for this dance was inspired by preferences and environments that we each associate with our natural ways of moving.  We explored how our perceptions of movement look and feel differently, particularly in the context of accessing the opposite preferences and environments to replicate each other’s natural movements in one another’s bodies. The concept of the piece expresses how we become inspired by and learn new things from certain people in our lives.

Piece of Mind

This dance is rooted in my research on Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences and how each intelligence can lead to new choreographic possibilities. This piece took an experimental approach to choreography, and the dancers each contributed to the dance by transforming a base movement phrase into a new one by utilizing and exemplifying their primary types of intelligence. The music was created by Aaron Caplea before the choreographic process began, and I crafted the base movement phrase based solely on images that came to mind during my first time hearing the music and the feelings and thoughts that were associated with this first impression. Certain sections were choreographed specifically to the music by me, and the transformed phrases by the dancers were specifically placed in areas that I felt that the dancers' movements and intentions lined up with the feelings from specific sections of the music.

This short film was filmed entirely during quarantine in March, 2020 at the beginning of the COVID-19 lockdown. The manager of a company is beyond frustrated with Zoom and everything that she has to do, and she dreads her virtual staff meetings. Her feelings about Zoom seem to change as a spontaneous dance party breaks out to distract the staff from the stressors of their meeting.
