Statements

Artistic Statement

As a dance artist, I have always valued the act of expressing myself through movement that represents something bigger than myself. My choreographic process consists of finding a source of inspiration that I am interested in and stuck on, and I feel that is my job to figure out why I am stuck on the topic by portraying my perception of it to an audience. I begin by crafting the plot of my work before beginning the choreography so that I can work to effectively convey specific meanings, emotions, or important events to the viewers through the lens of dance. My dances are strongly rooted in portraying narratives through points of focus with the eyes and body, relationships between the dancers, relationship between the performer(s) and the audience, motifs, and distinct gestures to allow the audience to create meanings of the work for themselves. I am intrigued by real and fictional events, hypothetical scenarios, and the idea of abstracting everyday situations to help the audience feel that they are vicariously experiencing the stories of each piece to feel what the dancers feel as they are performing. In each of my dances, I value taking the audience on a journey while providing them with an entirely different experience in each performance.

Teaching Statement

As a teacher, I aspire to inspire the students to grow technically and artistically in the safe, judgement-free space of the dance studio. Maintaining an open mind as an educator enables the students to feel comfortable and understood while expressing the truest versions of themselves through the art of dance. I work to train the students to work with what they have to help them properly care for themselves inside and outside of class so that they can achieve long careers in dance. I aspire for students to leave each class with heightened self-confidence, technical awareness, and curiosity to continue learning about various dance forms.
